Layers Haircut

Layers are a great addition to any haircut. They help to add movement to a style, reduce bulkiness and can sometimes make styling easier. If you have extra frizzy or thick hair, you will want to go with very long layers as short layers do not work well with frizzy hair.

One of the most confusing types of hair styles are those that are layered. Even the term "layering" is often misunderstood by hairdressers and hair consumers alike.

This article was written to share hair secrets about what hair layering really is and tips on how to acquire the layered hairstyle of your dreams.

Quite simply, hair layering means the creation of variable lengths of strands throughout an established hair cut whether long, medium, short or mixed lengths.

Although there are multiple reasons for confusion about hair layering, the key confusion is not in the actual definition but is tied to the misinterpretation of the many different ways layering can be used to alter or enhance an existing hairstyle.

Layering may be done with a traditional hair cutting scissors, a thinning shears that has one notched blade, with a razor or a combination.

The tools utilized depend on the skill and comfort level of the hairdresser as well as the type and texture of hair being layered. The desired hairstyle will also influence which layering tools are used.

Thinning shears are quite similar to hair cutting scissors except that they have one or both blades notched or serrated. The single notched edge of thinning shears cuts more hair. The notches provide a way to layer hair in a uniform manner.

A very popular trend today is to get a short to medium length haircut with very long layers added throughout. The short shag hairstyle, similar to Meg Ryan’s in Harry met Sally, is making a comeback this year. It has that heavy layered- looks like you grabbed the scissors and started cutting your hair every which way-look that can be worn in a short or medium length.

There is a shortcut step that many women have used in performing this haircut. The trick has made it possible to give a good-looking cut with minimal experience. Simply have the person whose hair is to be cut lie on a table or high counter top with his or her head hanging over the end upside down. Make sure the head is completely vertical – albeit inverted – comb the hair down and cut it off on a straight plane. It’s not practical for many people, but in cases where it can be done it will greatly speed the cutting process.
