Layers Haircut

Layers are a great addition to any haircut. They help to add movement to a style, reduce bulkiness and can sometimes make styling easier. If you have extra frizzy or thick hair, you will want to go with very long layers as short layers do not work well with frizzy hair.

Haircut

One of the most confusing types of hair styles are those that are layered. Even the term "layering" is often misunderstood by hairdressers and hair consumers alike.

This article was written to share hair secrets about what hair layering really is and tips on how to acquire the layered hairstyle of your dreams.

Haircut

Quite simply, hair layering means the creation of variable lengths of strands throughout an established hair cut whether long, medium, short or mixed lengths.

Although there are multiple reasons for confusion about hair layering, the key confusion is not in the actual definition but is tied to the misinterpretation of the many different ways layering can be used to alter or enhance an existing hairstyle.

Haircut

Layering may be done with a traditional hair cutting scissors, a thinning shears that has one notched blade, with a razor or a combination.

The tools utilized depend on the skill and comfort level of the hairdresser as well as the type and texture of hair being layered. The desired hairstyle will also influence which layering tools are used.

Thinning shears are quite similar to hair cutting scissors except that they have one or both blades notched or serrated. The single notched edge of thinning shears cuts more hair. The notches provide a way to layer hair in a uniform manner.

A very popular trend today is to get a short to medium length haircut with very long layers added throughout. The short shag hairstyle, similar to Meg Ryan’s in Harry met Sally, is making a comeback this year. It has that heavy layered- looks like you grabbed the scissors and started cutting your hair every which way-look that can be worn in a short or medium length.

There is a shortcut step that many women have used in performing this haircut. The trick has made it possible to give a good-looking cut with minimal experience. Simply have the person whose hair is to be cut lie on a table or high counter top with his or her head hanging over the end upside down. Make sure the head is completely vertical – albeit inverted – comb the hair down and cut it off on a straight plane. It’s not practical for many people, but in cases where it can be done it will greatly speed the cutting process.

Plum Eyeshadow

If a smoky eye in inky black is too severe for you, try to create the look in a color. Mila Kunis got it right with a smoldering shade of plum at St. Jude’s 50th anniversary gala in Beverly Hills. The look worked especially well with her deep purple lace dress. Start with a silvery layer of lavender dabbed along the top and bottom lashlines. Then top it off with the darker tone of shadow and a liner over the water line. Try a smoky gray eye with a platinum dress or a matching navy eye and gown on your next big night.

Navy Eyeliner

At the 17th Annual Critics Choice Awards in Los Angeles, Emma Stone's shimmery blue eyeliner, courtesy of makeup artist Rachel Goodwin, caught our attention. "Navy-lined eyes are an easy way to baby step into the world of color," Goodwin told us. "I used a metallic blue for a more glamorous effect." In the same way a chambray shirt and a pair of jeans will work with almost anything, blue eyeliner can be an unexpected neutral in your makeup bag. Goodwin notes that keeping the rest of your makeup low-key will prevent the pop of color from feeling dated.

Shapely Eye Shadow

Harsh lines are usually a no-no when it comes to eye shadow, but Ashanti's bold blue look has us reconsidering. At the grand reopening of Jay-Z's 40/40 club, the singer rocked a shimmery cerulean shadow with winged out liner. We love how the color gives off an unexpected edge without being reminiscent of the '80s. When creating a graphic look like Ashanti's eye shadow primer is key. Smooth on the primer beforehand so that the bold color has something to grip onto, and keep the rest of your makeup light so your eyes can take center stage.

Beauty Advice 21

To minimize your makeup bag, pack only the essentials: moisturizer for luminous skin, rehydrating elixir to refresh your makeup, powder to de-shine your T-zone, an eyeshadow palette, lipstick, and mascara.

Perfect Black Eyeliner

At the Paris premiere of Tinker Tailor Soldier SpySalma Hayek lined her lids with soft smudgy black liner, which defined her eyes without looking too harsh. For best results, try a thin waxy pencil and start on the bottom, inside the waterline. Next, tug on the top lid before gliding the pencil across in two short strokes: One from the inside and one from the outer corner. Take an angled shadow brush to gently smudge. Finish with a wash of taupe—like Salma—inside the crease for a glamorous wintry look.

Beauty Advice 20

Sidestep streaks by mixing self-tanner with moisturizer before applying. This dilutes the formula so you don't look stripey.

Ultra-Soft Eye Makeup

At the premiere of her new movie,Bachelorette Kirsten Dunst sported the most perfectly undone braid across the crown of her head and a barely-there smoky eye. Her makeup artist Jamie Greenberg used mark products to create the subtle look. She prepped Dunst’s lids with an eye primer, then swept a sheer shadow in the corners of her eyes and followed with a dusting of silver metallic in the creases. "To give her some depth and augment her natural eye color, I added a blue shade and lightly outlined her lower lids with a long-wear felt tip liner and shadow,” says Greenberg. She finished up with some mascara. Dunst’s glowing skin and sheer red lip stain finishes off her look that’s glamorous without being overdone.

Radiant Skin

Jessica Alba wasn't afraid of sporting a strapless dress at the 2010 Venice International Film Festival. And for good reason: Her skin had a healthy, lit-from-within glow. To keep the skin on your body from looking dull and lifeless, swap your daily lotion with a moisturizing body perfection cream. Most contain hyaluronic acid, which leaves your skin taut and luminous.

Even-toned Skin

GET THE LOOK: Discoloration and dark patches have no place on our faces! Luminous, even-toned skin makes you look years younger. To undo the damage the sun causes your complexion, look for a night cream with potent levels of albatin, which inhibits melanin production.
INSIDER TRICK: To keep skin looking radiant, wear a sheer foundation containing SPF and glow-enhancers during the day, like Laura Mercier's Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer.

Matte Skin

GET THE LOOK: Buh-bye high-shine makeup! Lucy Liu's skin looks ready for the transition from summer into fall with an ever-so-soft dewy finish.
INSIDER TRICK: Avoid the greasies! Prep bare skin with an oil-absorbing makeup primer, which soaks up shine before it has a chance to affect cosmetics. After applying makeup, gently dab your T-zone with translucent powder. (Look for a finely milled formula, which looks natural, not dusty).

Blemish-Free Complexions

GET THE LOOK: Beautiful skin like Amy Adams's starts with a few simple lifestyle changes, says Dallas-based dermatologist, Dr. Allison Singer. "Always wash your face before bed and avoid high-sugar foods," she says. "Recent studies suggest increased insulin levels can increase oil gland activity."
INSIDER TRICK: If a pimple pops up before a big event, Dr. Singer says, "A cortisone injection given by a dermatologist directly into the blemish will make it go away in about 24 to 48 hours. Also, a combination of benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin cream used on the spot is a great zit zapper."
